Oxfam published a report this month noting that 85 people in the world have the collective wealth of another 3.5 BILLION people. The Walton family, which owns Wal-Mart, controls a fortune equal to the wealth of the bottom 42 percent of Americans combined. 400 Americans have more wealth than half of all Americans combined.
Such income inequality challenges most religious traditions' belief in the inherent worth of all people. This year's CLUE-LA InGathering will focus on the growing Living Wage Movement, a vision that rehumanizes the dehumanized. Fast food workers, hotel workers, public sector workers...all are God's children, and Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, and so many other traditions have ancient roots in lifting up the marginalized, the dispirited, the oppressed.
There is a movement afoot to transform our poverty-wage jobs into jobs that can sustain families. CLUE-LA is at the forefront of this movement, and we hope you will join us to learn how our traditions approach income disparity and what you can do to support the movement!
