Port Workers
For years, truck drivers and warehouse workers at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles for years have faced unfair working conditions that endanger their safety, impoverish their families, and destroy their futures.
Employers treat port truck drivers as independent contractors, excluding them from basic benefits, stealing wages from them, and cheating the government out of payroll taxes. Truckers often have to shoulder expenses, like truck leases and daily gasoline use, which should be paid by employers. They also deny drivers access to workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, health and disability insurance, a livable minimum wage, and lunch and rest breaks. Many port workers are also immigrants, and face an uncertain future as the federal government phases out programs that grant them conditional status, like Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
CLUE has joined drivers and warehouse workers in large-scale, port-wide strikes, picket lines and actions at company truck yards, marine terminals, and warehouses, and we will continue standing with them until Los Angeles' ports become a safe workplace where they can put in a fair day's work, earn a living wage, and take pride in their contribution to one of the most important sectors of the American economy.
